Jenkins is one of the most widely used and loved open source projects. The mission of the project is to serve developers and help them continuously integrate and deliver their code.

As successful as the project was, as it continued to mature it faced new challenges the community were keen to tackle. Most significantly was how to sustain the community which eventually led to the formation of the Continuous Delivery Foundation.

This talks looks at the origins of the CDF, the specific challenges of managing a mature open source project as well as why and how the Jenkins community made the transition. We also look at the options that were considered but not taken such as a Jenkins Software Foundation. This talk will also cover consideration for a number of aspects including open source governance, security, outreach, managing debt and especially nurturing growth in new markets.
