Some open source project communities use Contributor License Agreements (CLAs) as part of their process to receive contributions. This talk will (emphatically!) not discuss whether projects should or should not use CLAs. Rather, for those projects that choose to use them, we will discuss the practical and logistical challenges that can arise as a result. We will discuss and demonstrate a new CLA automation tool developed by the Linux Foundation, with the goals of helping to ensure that CLAs are handled efficiently and transparently; that the purposes for having a CLA are not undermined through difficulties with their use in practice; and that organizations can easily manage the lists of their authorized contributors.
