Much as Open Source has changed industries, industry has also changed Open Source. As other technologies and segments embrace and participate in Open Source, we should expect Open Source to continue to evolve. Its evolution will in part be driven by the incentives that exist for organisations to participate.

Being able to purchase or run software and platforms as a service has been a key instigator of recent change in both industry and Open Source. It has enabled deploying and maintaining complex systems and environments to become relatively easy.

This presentation discusses some of the historical incentives around Open Source participation and how they have and have not changed with the rise of cloud technologies. We will also hypothesize on how 3 coming changes will impact Open Source: Machine Learning, Standards and Open Hardware.
